Full portable or mini-portable?
A portable package runs from an extracted folder instead of a conventional installation. The full and minimalist packages differ in what they include.
| Edition | Included | Choose it when |
|---|---|---|
| Full portable ZIP / 7z | Themes, localizations, default plugins and Plugins Admin | You want a complete portable setup |
| Mini-portable / minimalist | A smaller set of resources, default light and dark themes, English localization; no bundled plugins or Plugins Admin | You deliberately want the stripped-down package |
Both require the right processor architecture. Use the Windows architecture checklist if you are unsure which build matches your machine.
Run Notepad++ from a portable folder
Get the archive
Open the official downloads or GitHub release assets. Choose the full portable ZIP for the most familiar feature set.
Extract the whole package
Create a writable folder, then extract the archive into it. Keep the folder structure together. Launching a single executable from inside a compressed archive is not the same as extracting the package.
Launch the editor
Open notepad++.exe from the extracted directory. Create and save a test file. Keep the package’s supporting files next to the application.
Keep your settings with the folder
For a regular portable setup, use a location outside protected Program Files directories. The portable package is designed to keep its configuration within its directory tree.
What portable setup does differently
Portable use does not normally create system file associations or the Windows “Edit with Notepad++” context-menu entry. If you need those integrations on your own PC, the installer may be more convenient.
A portable editor can still open files from different directories, but it does not bypass Windows file permissions. A folder or removable drive must remain writable if you want to save local settings there.
Notepad++ treats that protected directory specially and can use your Windows AppData configuration there even when a local-configuration marker exists. Use an ordinary writable folder for a predictable portable setup.
Moving or updating a portable copy
Close the editor and back up your existing folder before replacing program files. Keep a separate backup of important documents: the editor folder and the files you edit are not necessarily the same location. Follow the new release’s instructions when upgrading.
Portable questions
Does the portable edition include Plugins Admin?
The full portable package does. Mini-portable does not include it. If you need the usual plugin-management interface, start with the full package.
Do I need administrator rights?
Extracting and running the portable package in a folder you can write to normally avoids installation privileges. Access to protected files and organization-managed software remains controlled by Windows and your organization.
Can I use a USB drive?
A writable removable drive can hold a portable folder. Close the editor before ejecting it, and keep backups of your settings and documents.
