Choose the package for your system
Notepad++ publishes Windows builds for different processor architectures. The package name matters more than the age or brand of your PC.
| Windows system | Package to select | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
| 64-bit Intel or AMD | x64 / 64-bit | Most conventional Windows laptops and desktops |
| Windows on ARM | ARM64 | Computers with an ARM-based processor |
| 32-bit Windows | x86 / 32-bit | A system specifically reported as 32-bit |
To check in Windows, open Settings → System → About and look for System type. If this is a work-managed computer, follow your organization’s software policy.
Use the full portable ZIP in a folder you can write to. See the portable setup guide for its limitations and package choices.
Install Notepad++ on Windows
Open an official release
Use the official download directory or official GitHub release. Read the release notes and choose the installer for your architecture.
Run the installer
Open the downloaded .exe. Review the setup options and complete the installation. Windows may request administrator approval to write to the installation directory.
Open a small test file
Launch Notepad++, create a new text file, type a line and save it in a folder you can access. Start with a copy when you plan to edit an existing file.
Set up your workspace
Use the Language menu if syntax highlighting does not match your file. Open Settings → Preferences for interface options; Dark Mode settings are available there.
If the first launch is confusing
The installer does not fit my PC
Recheck System type and the package architecture. Use a supported current release rather than selecting an old build just because its number looks familiar. The project maintains supported-system notes.
I cannot write to the install location
A protected directory can require administrator rights. A portable package in your own writable folder is a different setup option; it does not grant access to protected system files.
Where do I change keyboard shortcuts?
Open Settings → Shortcut Mapper. If a shortcut from a guide differs from your installation, the mapper and menu labels show your current assignment. See the keyboard shortcut reference.
Installation questions
Do I need MSI or EXE?
For a normal personal installation, the EXE installer is the straightforward choice. The MSI package is primarily intended for managed deployment by IT teams.
Can I use plugins after installing?
Yes. Open Plugins → Plugins Admin to manage listed plugins. Plugin availability can depend on architecture and version; see the plugin setup guide.
Should I set it as my default text editor?
That is optional. First confirm the editor works with your files, then use Windows app settings to choose a default for the file extensions you want. Installing the app does not require changing every association.
